Meet Kenyan Lady Who Dated Her Cousin for 2 Months Before Discovering They Were Related

A Kenyan woman identified as Nimo has sparked widespread discussion online after discovering that the man she had been dating for two months was actually her first cousin.

Nimo reportedly shared the unexpected experience on TikTok on Saturday, August 15, 2026. She explained that the shocking revelation happened during a family gathering, where she finally learned the identity of her boyfriend’s parents and realised there was a close family connection.

According to Nimo, she had not visited her rural home since 2007. Because of her long absence, she was unfamiliar with several members of her extended family, including the man she had unknowingly started dating.

The truth reportedly emerged when the man attended the same family gathering as Nimo. 

During the event, relatives recognised him and established that he was the son of Nimo’s maternal uncle. This meant the man she had been romantically involved with was actually her first cousin.

The discovery reportedly left Nimo stunned, particularly because she had only recently decided to resume dating after taking some time away from relationships. 

What had initially appeared to be a normal romantic relationship suddenly became a complicated family matter.

A second video shared by Nimo showed relatives gathered together for a serious discussion following the revelation. 

The meeting appeared to have been organised to address the situation and determine how the unexpected discovery should be handled.

The story quickly gained traction on social media, with the video attracting approximately 150,000 views and close to 1,000 comments from users who expressed surprise and shared their opinions.

Some Kenyans said the incident highlighted the importance of learning about one's extended family, particularly before entering romantic relationships. One TikTok user, Joy, wrote, "That's why millennials' first date ilikuwa kuulizana maswali like father's name, mother's name etc...pole"

Tash added, "With time, you will understand why millennials do things differently. The first date was enough to know every detail about him."

Another user, Hummingbird, claimed that a similar incident had occurred in their family. 

According to the user, two cousins met in Nairobi, developed a romantic relationship and even had a child before relatives eventually discovered that they were related.

Essy also shared her perspective, saying, "That's why I don't date from my tribe juu mimi sijui cousins wangu…"

Nimo’s experience has therefore reignited conversations about the importance of understanding family backgrounds, especially for people who spend many years away from their rural homes and extended relatives.
